I’ve spent the afternoon weeding the flower beds, potting petunias and marigolds for the front and back porches, and finally getting the vegetable garden all set up. This year I planted strawberries, cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, yellow squash, jalapeños, sweet mint, and cauliflower. I’m most excited to see how the cauliflower does. I also really want to plant some radishes and pumpkins but I couldn’t find any today.

It’s one of those perfect weather Sundays that make being outside feel great. I only wish we had a little kiddie pool in the backyard for me to soak my feet in while I read a magazine.

The irises in our garden are not 100% in full bloom yet but...

For those who asked, here’s the new oil painting. It reminds me of my late great aunt Ellen and also brings to mind all of our irises in our garden here in Denver. I might change out the frame at some point but this will have to do for the time being. Now I just have to figure out where to hang it. Hmmm.

Denver hopes to buy $2 million sculpture by Ned Kahn for DIA:

Yay for public art. This article also talks about all the other public art prospects that DIA is trying to obtain.

I like that the Denver airport cares about art and recognizes that millions of people pass through those spaces on a daily basis. I know that a lot of Denver artists and crafters have been featured there (specifically the exhibits come to mind in the passway before security in Terminal A).

As someone who both loves art and also travels very frequently, I love the idea of using areas of the airport as a space to appreciate public art. I’m interested to see if we end up getting a huge kinetic sculpture or something similar. A lot of people hate our apocalyptic horse sculpture at DIA but at least it gets people talking about art, arguing for or against it, arguing its relative “beauty,” etc. I’m sure there will be a lot of resistance about the $2mil price tag on whatever Kahn comes up with but again, at least it would generate discussion on the “worth” of art, as well as the piece itself.

And now I’ve gone off on a far longer thought bubble than intended to talk about an article link… But yay art! Let’s all talk about it! I’m a nerd!

Anniversary dinner finally gave us an excuse to go to D Bar. Started with champagne/blueberry/basil cocktails, then moved on to zucchini fries with garlic aioli and chicken-n-waffles sandwich with sweet potato waffle fries. Finally dessert: raspberry soufflé with vanilla creme anglais, beignets with homemade Meyer lemon curd, and raspberry sorbet.

Um, yum.

I made a version of this shrimp with avocado-mango salsa tonight and now I want to tell everyone I know to go make it too. It was that perfect combo of super easy and SUPER delicious. Make it.

Modifications: I didn’t feel like firing up the grill or making foil packets (today at least) so I wilted spinach and cooked the shrimp in a skillet, and I made pearled cous cous (what we had on hand) on the stovetop instead of regular cous cous. Then I mixed everything up in a big bowl and devoured it. Next time I might try the foil packet method. Stovetop worked just fine though.

ETA: I stole the pic from the recipe link because I was too busy chowing down to take a pic myself.
